Petoskey Stone: (Wikapedia) is rock composed of fossilized coral deposits in Limestone. It is often pebble-shaped but stones as large as 92 pounds in weight have been found. Petoskey Stones were formed by glaciation in the Devonian Period, about 350 million years ago when Michigan has a warm inland sea. Moving sheets of ice lifted pieces of bedrock, smoothing and carrying them to their current place of origin - north-western (and some in the north-eastern) portion of Michigan's lower peninsula. Petoskey stones are fragments of a coral reef that was originally deposited during the Devonian period. When dry, it looks like ordinary limestone but when wet or polished the distinctive mottled pattern of the six-sided coral fossils emerges. The name Petoskey comes from an Ottawa Indian Chief, Chief Pet-O-Sega. The city of Petoskey, Michigan, is also named after him. It is the center of the area where the stones are found, commonly on beaches and in sand dunes, the most popular being those surrounding Petoskey and Charlevoix. New Petoskey Stones are exposed at the water's edge each spring. Petoskey Stones are also commonly found in Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, New York, Canada, Germany, England, and even Asia.
