American Gem Society: Amethyst is purple quartz (blend of violet and red).  It is found all over the world, including Canada, the USA, South America and Africa.  Amethyst often occurs in geodes or cavities of granitic rocks.  The name Amethyst comes from the ancient Greek word ‘methustos’ which means intoxicated.  In ancient times people believed wearing it could prevent drunkenness.  Amethyst is a form of Quartz, which is the second most abundant material found in the Earth’s crust.  Amethyst gets its color from irradiation, iron impurities and the presence of trace elements.  Its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale (the same as other Quartz).  Amethyst is most commonly recognized as a purple color but it actually ranges from light pinkish violet to deep purple.  Amethyst is considered to be the birthstone for February and the stone used to celebrate the 6th and 17th year of marriage.
